GALILEO COLT PROVES POPULAR - TATTERSALLS BOOK 1

After selling a very popular Galileo filly on the first day of the sale, Eugene McDermott was offering a Galileo colt out of Dapprima (a black type winning mare in Germany).

Throughout the week this colt proved to be very popular in viewings and his price tag of £300,000 is a reflection of this. He sold to Demi O'Byrne who has purchased some very nice Kennycourt horses over the years.

The colt proved to be another astute purchase as a foal for McDermott who paid 220,000 for him at last years December sale.

EUROPEAN BLOODSTOCK NEWS - 8th OCTOBER - WACHMAN DENIES MAGNIER

Another highly-prized daughter of GALILEO (LOT 79), offered from EUGENE McDermott's KENNYCOURT STUD in county Kildare, proved one of the better pinhooks on day one of this three-day sale.

Her appearance also led to an intriguing tussle between John Magnier and Son in Law, trainer David Wachman.

Magnier, surrounded by COOLMORE allies on the stairs near the ring entrance, went to 350,000 guineas, but WACHMAN, standing 10 metres away at ground level and speaking to a client on phone, encouraged Charles Egerton to add another 10,000 and the hammer came down.

It transpired that Egerton, a trainer in his own right, was acting in the role of bloodstock agent, although he admitted later - "i'd love to train her, but that wasn't an option. She'll be trained by David Wachman and has been bought for a new client who wants to start a stud. It's hard to find tap-root families and no-one needs an introduction to Galileo. If you want to start a stud you have to buy the best. It's expensive but this has always been a rich man's game".

For McDermott this sale completed a clenching ride that saw his 230,000gns PINHOOKED FOAL become a 130,000gns paper profit.

Declines in yearling prices had dented his initial confidence in the filly's potential, but her sire's progeny kept winning and further optimism came from the yearling's juvenile half-sister, the Tommy Stack trained OUI SAY OUI (ROYAL APPLAUSE), Who was second to AGAIN in the Gr. 2 Debutante Stakes and then a close fifth in the Parkinsilla Goffs Fillies Million.

McDermott has been trading as Kennycourt Stud for five years, having made a success of the building trade, another sector that is having a dip in fortunes.

Asked about the filly, he said: "She had the walk from day one and showed it again today. 12 months ago the foal market was very high and flamboyant, but since then i've been nervous, like everyone else. It's a nerve-wrecking business, but you get a special joy when a horse your selling does well in the ring. With this filly we had 98 looks, which helps, because you know you've done something right".

"I bought 15 foals last year and so far have offered 5 and sold 3, so i'm about breaking even, but given the economy a 5% profit or loss is ok, because other businesses are down 40%".

Asked about plans for investment in this years foal crop, McDermott said: "I'll be looking with a totally different focus. In the property market when things get tough we say, 'settle down, take stock and go back to basics', and i think that applies to this trade too. Right now i'm just very grateful to Charles Egerton and David Wachman for buying the filly!".

GOFFS MILLION SALE

Our yearlings proved very popular at the recent goffs sale. Many viewings turned into some very fierce competition for our lots.

Our sale topper was the GALILEO X CAPTIVATING colt who sold for 260,000 to Derek Sheehan. This stunning son of Galileo had an imposing physique and his buyer got an absolute bargain at 260,000. With a family littered with Black type winners, it will be no surprise if we hear more of this colt.

10 lots later the KINGS BEST X CHAMELA BAY filly entered the ring. From the family of Invincible Spirit and Chinese White this filly had massive interest through the week and bidding again was competitive. Finally going to Vincent McDonnell for 140,000, this filly looks like we may see her in next October's race.

The GALILEO X PEARL BRIGHT filly was purchased by BBA IRELAND for 80,000 and again real value for a filly by the BEST SIRE in EUROPE!

In all a good sale for Kennycourt Stud amid slow-down fears. We aim to bring quality to each sale and our clients would agree we succeed in doing so.
